Dirty feeders are one of the most common reasons hummingbirds stop visiting. In warm climates, nectar ferments quickly, so cleaning frequency matters.
Weekly Cleaning Routine
- Empty leftover nectar completely.
- Rinse with hot water.
- Scrub all ports and seams with a feeder brush.
- Rinse again until no residue remains.
- Air-dry fully before refilling.
Avoid soap fragrances and never use bleach mixtures unless manufacturer instructions explicitly allow it.
Heat Rule
When temperatures are high, change nectar every 1-2 days. In cooler weather, every 3-4 days can be enough.
Quick Nectar Formula
- 1 part white sugar
- 4 parts water
- No dyes or sweeteners
Boil water, dissolve sugar, cool completely, then fill the feeder.
Consistency is key. A simple routine keeps birds healthy and improves return visits.
