How to Clean Hummingbird Feeders (Without Damaging Them)

Dirty feeders are one of the most common reasons hummingbirds stop visiting. In warm climates, nectar ferments quickly, so cleaning frequency matters.

Weekly Cleaning Routine

  1. Empty leftover nectar completely.
  2. Rinse with hot water.
  3. Scrub all ports and seams with a feeder brush.
  4. Rinse again until no residue remains.
  5. Air-dry fully before refilling.

Avoid soap fragrances and never use bleach mixtures unless manufacturer instructions explicitly allow it.

Heat Rule

When temperatures are high, change nectar every 1-2 days. In cooler weather, every 3-4 days can be enough.

Quick Nectar Formula

  • 1 part white sugar
  • 4 parts water
  • No dyes or sweeteners

Boil water, dissolve sugar, cool completely, then fill the feeder.

Consistency is key. A simple routine keeps birds healthy and improves return visits.
